Morrison family correspondence includes letters from John to his father Robert, his sister Mary, and her husband, Dr Benjamin Hobson. The letters give a good picture of life in Canton and Macau during the 1830's. The collection appears to have been received or assembled by Mary. There are also letters from William Leslie in Macau to his parents in Scotland in 1841-42. William was the brother of Patrick Leslie, who brought the first stock to the Darling Downs. Two other brothers also emigrated to Australia, marrying the daughters of Hannibal Macarthur. The connection between Morrison and Leslie is not clear.

John Robert Morrison was the son of Robert Morrison (1782-1834), the missionary to China. John lived in Canton, Macau, and other places in China between 1833 and 1842. Leslie, Patrick, 1815-1881.

Patrick Leslie emigrated from Scotland in the 1830s. He and his two brothers, Walter and George, were the first squatters to occupy land on the Darling Downs. Patrick married Kate McArthur, daughter of Hannibal Hawkins McArthur. The Leslies were the leading Darling Downs identities, taking an active part in politics. Patrick built the original Newstead House, and was a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly in 1857. The Leslie brothers' parents financed much of their enterprise, while remaining ...
